About Yazan Aref
Yazan Aref is a passionate innovator at the intersection of biotechnology and sustainable engineering. Currently pursuing his medical studies, Yazan brings a unique blend of life-science expertise and hands-on research experience—ranging from whole-genome sequencing of camel gut microbiomes to the design of synthetic tendons—to the development of Bio-Mend. His journey began with a deep fascination for how living systems repair and regenerate, fueling his drive to embed that functionality directly into our built environment.
Academic & Research Foundations
Student & Researcher: Yazan has already contributed to peer-mentored projects on paratuberculosis (Johne’s disease) and microbiome analysis, leveraging bioinformatics pipelines to decode complex microbial interactions.
Synthetic Biology & Prosthetics: He has collaborated on pioneering work in synthetic tendon design, marrying polymer science with cellular biology to create soft-tissue analogues.
AI-Driven Strain Optimization: For ITEX 2025, Yazan developed an AI model that selects optimal microbial strains for self-healing, pollutant-absorbing, biodegradable concrete—laying the computational groundwork for Bio-Mend’s adaptive capabilities.
Leadership & Community Engagement
Yazan’s expertise extends beyond the lab:
Founder & Community Leader: He established and leads “OrbitScholars,” a mentorship network guiding future innovators, and a peer support group for Misk Distinct Program applicants, fostering collaboration and shared learning.
Public Relations & Web Development: As PR lead and web developer for MawhibaSpark, Yazan honed his ability to translate complex scientific ideas into engaging digital experiences, ensuring Bio-Mend’s mission is communicated clearly to diverse audiences.

Vision for Bio-Mend
Driven by a vision of cities that heal themselves, Yazan is committed to scaling Bio-Mend from proof-of-concept to real-world infrastructure. By integrating living systems into concrete, he aims to revolutionize how we build—turning static materials into dynamic partners in sustainability, resilience, and environmental stewardship.
“In nature, every wound can heal itself. With Bio-Mend, we’re bringing that power into our buildings, bridges, and communities.” — Yazan Aref
